What is the recommended dosage?
Elevit is a small once-a-day tablet that can be taken at any time of the day. It is best to start taking Elevit at least one month before conception and throughout all three trimesters of pregnancy to support your baby's healthy growth and development. The original Elevit formulation contained 800 mcg of folic acid (folate). This formula was used in a large study8 that looked at the prevention of the first occurrence of neural tube defects. Elevit has maintained 800 mcg of folic acid based on this study and has been updated over time to include other key nutrients, such as iodine.
A subsequent clinical study4 demonstrated that protective levels of folate (folic acid) were achieved after supplementing with Elevit for just 4 weeks. Folic acid has been widely studied for over 30 years. It has been clinically proven to reduce the effects of neural tube defects such as spina bifida. For this reason, government guidelines recommend all planning and pregnant women take a supplement containing folic acid.
A recent Japanese study20 demonstrated that regardless of a woman’s MTHFR gene status, a daily multivitamin containing 800 mcg folic acid (the same dose contained in Elevit) achieved protective serum folate levels after four weeks of supplementation.
There are some reports that not all women can properly absorb folic acid due to a common genetic variant known as MTHFR polymorphism. A polymorphism is a variation in a gene that doesn’t necessarily affect how that gene works.
The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners guidance is clear that regardless of a woman’s MTHFR status, a supplement containing clinically proven folic acid is recommended for all planning and pregnant women.13 Some high-risk groups of women (e.g., women diagnosed with epilepsy) may have additional supplementation requirements, and this should be managed by their doctor.

Take one tablet daily before you start trying to conceive (pre-pregnancy) and throughout your entire pregnancy. It takes time to build up nutrient levels, which is why it is important to take Elevit daily for at least four weeks prior to conception (or as directed by your healthcare professional).
Take the whole tablet with water and preferably a meal. If you suffer from morning sickness, it is recommended to take Elevit at midday or in the evening.
