Folic acid (the supplemental form of folate) is a B group vitamin which aids development and growth. Increasing the amount of folate in your diet in the lead up to and during pregnancy can help prevent neural tube defects, such as spina bifida.

The original Elevit formulation (Elevit Pronatal) contained 800mcg folic acid. This formula was used in a large study1 that looked at the prevention of first occurrence of neural tube defects. Elevit has maintained 800mcg of folic acid based on this study and has been updated over time to include other key nutrients such as iodine.
A subsequent clinical study2 demonstrated that protective levels of folate were achieved after supplementing with Elevit for just 4 weeks
Folic acid has been widely studied for over 30 years. It is this form that has been clinically proven3 to reduce the effects of neural tube defects such as spina bifida. For this reason, government guidelines4 recommend all planning and pregnant women take a supplement containing folic acid.
A recent Japanese study5 demonstrated that regardless of a woman’s MTHFR gene status, a daily multivitamin containing 800mcg folic acid (the same dose contained in Elevit) achieved protective serum folate levels after four weeks of supplementation.
Elevit pre-conception & pregnancy multivitamin, taken in conjunction with a healthy diet, helps you meet the increased nutritional demands of pregnancy. Even with the best intentions, it can be difficult to meet these increased nutrient requirements from diet alone. For example, the recommended intake of iron increases 50% during pregnancy, and pregnant women are at risk of iron deficiency. Elevit helps prevent iron deficient anaemia. Similarly, there is an increased need for folic acid and iodine throughout pregnancy. Other vitamins and minerals that are required at higher levels throughout pregnancy include zinc, calcium, vitamin C, B6 and B12.
Take one tablet daily while trying to conceive and throughout your entire pregnancy. It takes time to build up nutrient levels which is why it is important to take Elevit daily for at least 4 weeks prior to conception (or as directed by your healthcare professional).
Take the whole tablet with water and preferably a meal. If suffering morning sickness it is recommended to take Elevit at midday or in the evening.
